Hi Emily,
Last Thursday was Earth Day, and our school organised a big campaign called “Let every day be an Earth Day”. It was brilliant!
First, our science teacher put coloured recycling bins in every corridor: blue for paper, yellow for plastic bottles and green for glass. Two pupils in each class are now bin monitors. They check that everyone puts their litter in the right bin.
In the school garden, a team of tree planters planted twenty olive trees. Then a bird watcher from a local association gave a talk about endangered species, like sea turtles and the Barbary deer, which lives in the forests of the north-west.
My favourite part was the healthy food stand. A vegetable grower from our village sold organic tomatoes and peppers. Our class made a poster with two lunch boxes: one full of fatty, sugary and salty snacks, and one with fruit, nuts, a legume salad and crunchy carrot sticks. Most pupils said the healthy box looked tastier!
At the end, our headmaster said that Earth Day shouldn’t happen only once a year. I agree! What do people in Wales do for the environment?

A compound noun is made of two words that work together as one noun.
- noun + noun: flower + pot = flower pot; school + garden = school garden; lunch + box = lunch box. The first noun works like an adjective: a pot for flowers.
- noun + (verb + -er) noun: a person who drives a taxi = a taxi driver; a person who plants trees = a tree planter; a thing that opens tins = a tin opener.
- Also: -ing + noun (recycling bin, swimming pool) and noun + -ing (bird watching, wind surfing).
The first noun is usually singular: a bottle bank (not bottles bank), a tree planter.

Verb ending in -e: just add -r (planter but driver, user). Short verb with one vowel + consonant: double it (runner, swimmer).
